Experience
I am a psychotherapist and counsellor with years of experience gained in private practice, at the clinic of the Guild of Psychotherapists and as a volunteer counsellor at Mind.
I draw also on many years’ work as a lawyer. As partner I led a department that represented thousands of survivors of personal injury, medical negligence, racial and sexual harassment and discrimination, and my team specialised in cases on behalf of military personnel. It was through encounters with soldiers suffering from mental health problems as a result of their service that I found my interest in psychotherapy. This work of course also gave me insight into the challenges and excitement associated with leadership, and brought me into contact with the worlds of politics and the media.
I spent the first part of my career in the East End of London, advocating for clients who were involved in situations involving domestic violence, neglect and control, and then with injuries in dangerous industries and housing, and it was there that I first became sensitised to the complex interactions that exist between economics, culture, politics and psychological experience.
